Activities in Sierra Leone

JICA is implementing its projects under the broader context of 'Cooperative Program' in accordance with the Poverty Reduction Strategic Paper (PRSP) established by the government of Sierra Leone.

Background of JICA's activity in Sierra Leone

JICA had assisted Sierra Leone by dispatching Japanese experts and accepting Sierra Leonean trainees to Japan before the conflict. After 11 years of the conflict, JICA accelerated its assistance for development to Sierra Leone by sending a project formulation mission in September 2004. The field office was set up in January 2005 to provide more effective assistance to the country.

 

JICA's Cooperative Program in Sierra Leone

Japan has chosen to assist the government of Sierra Leone achieve the objective of its PRSP, with the utmost priority on; 1) Consolidation of Peace and 2) Rural Development. Along with these, cooperative programs are:

Since unemployment was one of the significant issues that triggered the conflict, JICA is supporting the energy sector for economic growth. In this program, JICA supports rehabilitation of infrastructure (electricity) and its policy development such as management of the electric industry in order to ensure sustainability of the assistance.

This project focuses on rehabilitation of water supply station in Rokupr for enhancement of capacity on operation and maintenance based on self-support accounting system.

Integrated Project for Rural Health Development

The project is aiming at building the capacity of health administration in Kambia District with the expectation that the district will be able to analyze health problems and find solutions to them.
