Kono District is found in the Eastern province of Sierra Leone. It has fourteen (14) chiefdoms. The dominant tribe is Kono found in all chiefdoms. It shares common boundary with the republic of Guinea in the west and Northwest. Four chiefdoms, namely: Lei, Toli, Gbane Kandor, Mafindor are located along the guinea border. In each of these chiefdoms the native tribes are the Kono and the Kissi. Kono district shares common boundary with Kailahun district in the east, Koinadugu and Tonkolili in the north.

Kono district is known in sierra leone for its diamonds.It use to provide huge revenue for the government,hence the district was refered to as the (bread basket) of sierra leone.However,this scenario has changed over the years as diamonds are not easily found now. The type of minning now is capital intensive which the ordinary common man cannot afford.

As a result, people in Kono have embarked on Agriculture with more seriousness than before when diamonds were easier to find.Agricultural potential in the Kono district is very great; the soil is fertile with a favourable climate and abundant rainfall.Principal crops grown in the district are rice,cassava,cocoa and coffee.

Objectives

The Objectives of the Ministry of Agriculture Forestry and Food Security ,Kono District  are some of the guiding principles to achieve the National MAFFS Policy Objectives: (Make Agriculture the Engine for Socio – Economic Growth and Development through Commercialization and Private Sector/FBO Promotion)

The MAFFS District objectives:

  • Agricultural productivity increased (intensification and diversification)
  • Commercial Agriculture promotion.
  • Agriculture Research and Extension services delivery improvement.
  • Provision of effective and efficient resource management
  • Mainstream cross-cutting themes: Gender and youth promotion in agriculture, Farmer health and sustainable development and the environment.
